A carpet is commissioned, not stocked. You choose the design and dimensions; Mohammad Yousuf Shah's workshop knots it from a talim — the written script that records every knot and colour. We send loom photographs through the year and the finished piece carries its own lot record.
Yousuf and two colleagues read the talim aloud as they knot — a written script that records every knot and colour of a design. A three-by-five foot silk carpet at his knot density takes the workshop the better part of a year. We commission carpets rather than stock them, so the loom is never idle and no piece sits in a warehouse waiting for a buyer.

Care & use
Air the piece rather than washing it. Fold with acid-free tissue and keep it dry and out of direct light; for pashmina, dry-clean only, and rarely. Hand-made work settles with use — small irregularities are the record of the hand that made it, not a fault.
