This piece

Sozni is needle work, not weaving: the pattern is embroidered into a finished pashmina ground in silk thread so fine the reverse reads almost as clean as the face. A border-only piece takes months; a fully covered jamawar can take years. We quote per design after the ground is chosen.

Fayaz works with hand-spun Changthangi fibre brought down from the Changthang plateau in Ladakh. A plain shawl takes him around three weeks at the loom; a Kani-woven piece takes months, worked colour by colour with small wooden bobbins against a coded pattern called a talim. He will not weave with mill-spun yarn, which is why his output stays low and every piece is made to order.

Care & use

Air the piece rather than washing it. Fold with acid-free tissue and keep it dry and out of direct light; for pashmina, dry-clean only, and rarely. Hand-made work settles with use — small irregularities are the record of the hand that made it, not a fault.
